please don't @ping in DMs
Every message in a Discord Direct Message is already a ping.
In a crowded Discord server, typing @username is necessary to grab someone's attention. In a Direct Message (1-on-1 chat), there is only one other person in the room.

Why did you @ me inside our own DM? Every line already notifies me.

Sure, taking a look right now!
Why is pinging in DMs pointless?
Unlike server channels where notifications are usually set to "Only @mentions" by default, Direct Messages trigger a full notification for every single message sent.
- Plain text already pings: Sending a normal message in a DM plays the notification sound, adds a red unread badge, and sends a push notification to their phone.
- It doesn't bypass Do Not Disturb: Adding an
@mentiondoes not override DND, sleep mode, or muted conversations. If they aren't replying, pinging them harder won't change how Discord delivers the alert. - It creates visual clutter: Highlighting the whole line in yellow and slapping their own name in front of their face is the digital equivalent of tapping someone's shoulder while you're already in a private room talking to them.
What about turning ON the "Reply" ping in DMs?
When using Discord's Reply feature inside a DM, @ON is enabled by default. Leaving it on by accident is harmless—Discord doesn't double-notify for a single message—though toggling it off keeps the chat cleaner. The real issue is manually typing @username just to say hello or demand a faster reply.
